Q: Could you provide a brief background about yourself, your family, and your business?
I grew up in a family business in the clothing industry and later went on to work in the family business. After gaining experience in this environment, I decided to move to Milan where I worked for Prada for 3 years. After I returned to Australia, I decided to begin Gingerlilly Sleepwear, which I have now been running since 2006. My husband Anthony also works in the business and I have two wonderful teenage children whom I am encouraging to steer away from the clothing Industry, but who knows…lol.
Q: What inspired you to embark on the entrepreneurial journey?
I greatly admired my mother who ran a successful clothing label whilst raising my brother and me, so I guess I wanted to get into my own business in fashion and be able to do the same. In a sense, it’s all I knew. I saw a niche in the market back then for sleepwear that was more elegant and could also double as loungewear. I also saw a niche for sleepwear being a perfect gift.
Q: What aspects of being an entrepreneur do you enjoy the most?
it’s the flexibility to juggle motherhood and time for myself with the rewards of running a business. Also, it’s the travel aspect of my work and the fashion aspect, which is my passion.
Q: What are the significant challenges you have encountered as an entrepreneur?
A significant challenge for me is growing the business from predominantly wholesale to online. My background strength is in retail stores and not so much marketing and technology.
Q: What motivated you to join EO?
I was recommended by a close friend whom I respect very much as a business person.
Q: Can you share a valuable lesson you've learned from your own experience or another entrepreneur or mentor?
I have leant that you must love what you do and the rest will come. I have learnt that you should enjoy the journey because business will inevitably have ups and downs and is not guaranteed to go the way you would like.
